Who are the symbolic figures and women of history who intrigue you? Join author and teacher Rachel Jamison Webster, who will read from her new book, Mary is a River, and give a short workshop on meditative writing. Mary is a River is written in the voice of Mary Magdalene, who was a priestess, a partner to Jesus, a teacher after his death, and a woman maligned by the church patriarchs, who called her a prostitute to undermine her power. This correction of Mary's story is part of a groundswell of women reckoning with history and accessing their wisdom--and this event is timed to coincide with Mary's Saint's Day on July 22. You are invited to bring a journal and do your own guided writing and reflection.
Rachel Jamison Webster is the author of the books September and The Endless Unbegun. Her poetry has been recognized with awards from the Academy of American Poets and the Poetry Foundation. She teaches in Northwestern's Creative Writing Program.
